DIVERSITY ON THE RADIO IN 1931

Posted by STEVE M on

Look at this lovely advert from 1931 showing a radio receiving signals from Paris, New York and Sydney.  On seeing this, the more sensitive and woke types amongst us may think that 90 years ago our forebears were more switched on and sensitive (sic) than we give them credit for.
After all, diversity is any dimension that can be used to differentiate groups and people from one another. In a nutshell, it’s about empowering people by respecting and appreciating what makes them different, in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, education, and national origin and any endeavour that recognises and celebrates this deserves all the accolades we are capable of mustering.
But wait a minute.  Could it be that  the meaning in this arcane radio related advert may alternatively refer to the diversity of broadcast stations that were able to be received or even instead refer to diversity reception  where the use of signals originating from multiple independent sources, modulated with identical signal but variable transmission characteristics to overcome signal fading.
Also from 1931 we have this advert extolling the virtue of listening to "Johnny Foreigner" which may, or may not provide pointers as to which explanation is the most appropriate:-
