Its interesting the lengths that were taken in order to sell tape recorders, just look at this advertising shot from 1959:-

I have suggested to Mrs Mullard Magic that we re-enact this scene for the 21st century but she said that if I came near her with my little Nagra  then she would belt me with her loofah, oooo-errrr.  At least I suggested a battery tape deck as a concession to 'Elf & Safety!'
