STABILITY IN ALL YOUR ELECTRICAL INSTRUMENTS IN 1943 AND 2017
Posted by STEVE M on
I thought you might all like to so see this stirring advertisement from 1943, a time when our imperilled nation faced the threat of a jackboot on our neck from a certain corner of Europe. Just look at the headline message here which is that stability and a sure constant from both leadership in the form of central government signified by the Houses of Parliament and also for our electrical instruments is essential. Many of you will have heard the old saying that "History repeats itself" which is a paraphrasing of the actual words of George Santayana, a Spanish philosopher, essayist, poet and...
THE MULLARD HIGH SPEED VALVE TESTER - AT THE DEALER NEAR YOU - NOW! -

Resuming our Mullard story in 1951, we see that Mullard is still vigorously pushing the MHSVT and that it is being received with praise by the radio & TV trade. Here we see Chris Evan's grandad posing with his machine, in his letter to Mullard he went on to explain how he is clawing back his purchase capital outlay by charging customers "a bob" to have their valves tested - he thought about doing it for free but thought that customers wouldn't appreciate a service they didn't pay for(!) -that's the spirit! And yes, the MHSVT really was at...
WAS THE MARKETING MANAGER AT FURZEHILL AN EX LANCASTER BOMBER CREW MEMBER?

Just look at this advert from 1941 from Furzehill. Just look at this device incorporated into an advertisement that shows the precision delivery of a bomb down the chimney of a Boche factory, stirring stuff... but look close, for doesn't the contraption dangling from the (Halifax?) bomber remind you of something?....... what, not even the drop lead from a R1155/A1134 Lancaster/Halifax intercom system - it does to me and here's a photo to remind you. I reckon their marketing person was a member of a Lanc. crew to have drawn this advertisement in 1941 - what do you think? For...

NOT ITMA & TOMMY HANDLEY BUT RETMA AND THEIR VALVE NUMBERING SYSTEM!
Posted by STEVE M on
Yo peeps, today we are going to look at the RETMA valve numbering system. The Radio Electronics & Television Manufacturer's Association was formed in early 1953 and were pivotal in ensuring standardisation of American Valve numbering using the RETMA system. Although primarily an American system, it was also used extensively in Europe with Mullard using it to label American valve types imported or manufactured at the old Edswan works. In Britain, Brimar used the system extensively for most of their valve products. A RETMA valve code always takes the following form: - NUMBER PREFIX/LETTER GROUP/NUMBER SUFFIX/ADDITIONAL LETTER(S) where: - ...

PLASTICS USED IN RADIO MANUFACTURE 1929 ONWARDS
Posted by STEVE M on
As a chemist, people are always asking me what plastics other than bakelite were used in the manufacture of radio components and the answer is quite complex as the above table attests. Many different plastic types with differing colours and properties were used and the above table from 1941 gives a flavour for what was available. And here is just what plastics could do for the radio manufacturer - nice AWA Skyscraper and red 300 eh? Why not have a look at our stunning bakelite "Wee Megger" as a classic example of beautiful plastics in action?
