By 1989, Access the Flexible Friend had also disappeared and THIS is what happened next:-
Whatever would become of postcodes SS2 6PR, the site of the Ekco factory? well, in 2016, Bellway Homes built the Ekco Park estate with the last building works completed in 2019
In 2020, sculptor Anne Schwegmann-Fielding said: "EKCO is still so loved in Southend that it was not hard to meet people with great knowledge and stories."
She went on to sculpt an artwork, called Our Eric which represents a celebration of Eric Kirkham Cole and Southend's EKCO factory with the statue depicting Mr Cole standing on an AD65 EKCO radio, one of his company's best-known products - the famed Round Ekco radio. Here you see it, installed and a fitting testament to a great man:-
He is wearing a suit made up of a mosaic of 182 photographs showing the social history of EKCO.
There is more to this story but you will have to wait until next week for Part 4!
