ANTON LISTENS TO THE LIGHT RADIO IN 1943

I just love this photograph which shows  the radio room or to give it the posh name, the command and communication car (Befehlswagen) of the Führersonderzug "Brandenburg."  Hitler's personal train, sometime during 1943.

First of all, starting at the LHS of the photo we see a 3 rotor Enigma Coding Machine.   Scanning L to R, we see a collection of PSU/ATU, etc, serving an  Anton Lw.Ea - the Long Wave Anton.

I bet you they are all listening to the BBC Light Programme, launched in 1940, using some of the frequencies previously used by the Home Service.  Good old 'Light"  was broadcast on the BBC Home Service from 1943 until 1966, which is a much better innings that the Führersonderzug (Fuhrer train) had.

On 7 May 1945, after the death of Hitler, the SS decided to blow up and burn Hitler's personal carriage near Mallnitz.  What remained was seized by Britain and  the USA for  use in occupied Germany.  By 1955, the remaining carriages were given back to Germany and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer used the rest of the Führersonderzug as his personal train, and in the 1960s and 1970s, the wagons were separated and used until the 80s. Some of the remaining carriages are now stored in a museum.
