I HAVE BOUGHT AN MCR1 SPY SET FOR TEN QUID, THEM WERE T'DAYS!

Posted by STEVE M on

March 1947 was a good month, after all it was when Pam Ayres was born as was Elton John.

It was the wettest March for 300 years, so, If you had come up to town to escape the Great Dykes flood in Norfolk, you would have been caught in the Thames flood as well   Buf if you were persistent, your mackintosh and galoshes clad self, topped by a Trilby or a villainous Homburg had managed to fight your way to London Central Radio Stores in Lisle Street, you could have picked up a bargain MCR1 spy set for £10.50!!!!!!   It doesn't say whether or not they threw in  the biscuit tin either but being from Yorkshire, I would expect a few digestives as well as the tin plus a cuppa tea to wash them down..

Adjusting this paltry sum for 2022 prices we see that the quoted ten guineas actually equates, today, to approximately £470!!!!!  Still cheap for a spy set but not quite the bargain it first seemed, especially when the purchase price represented the total contents of the average wage packet for two weeks.  Interestingly two weeks average wage would probably still purchase an MCR1  - anyone currently got a spare £1140?  me  - I'll have to raid the gas 'n electric savings tin currently bulging with fifty quid notes!!!!!!!!
