POTENTIOMETERS FOR TV BY MANY COMPANIES INCLUDING EDISWAN

Posted by STEVE MYCIUNKA on

In the 1950s and 1960's, these were a handy sales item and many manufacturers made them and turned a tidy profit and we have introduced a whole range of these on the website that may be of interest to restorers for use or to add ambience to a collection due to their beautifully coloured boxes - see them here: -

MULLARD MAGIC VOLUME CONTROLS

One manufacturer which we will blog about today was Ediswan which was a very well established and diverse manufacturer, ranging from bulbs like these from 1899: -

To sexy vacuum cleaners like these from 1931:-

Which sold a hell of a lot better once they changed the name from the 1929 product placement name of 'Little Glutton'

There were the valves of course from the 1920's and gaining in popularity to encompass transmitting and more mundane yet highly rated types too:-

Such as the 12E1, a KT88 wannabe which unfortunately does not command the same high prices: -

Which can be bought HERE or HERE as well as HERE or HERE

Helped in popularity no doubt by the Ediswan man here: -

Some people thought him so cute that they immortalised him as body art: -

Anyhow, I digress, so back to the Ediswan story and we come to the TV age when Ediswan made lovely emotive adverts showing their TV involvement: -

Then there's the replacement market for TV repairs and very nice business it was too: -

What was interesting about the Ediswan replacement and OEM potentiometers was that they were branded 'Morganite"  And Morganite is a term used to describe  "pink beryl", "rose beryl" or"pink emerald." The pink color of morganite is attributed to Mn2+ ions.  Pink beryl of fine color and good sizes was first discovered on an island on the coast of Madagascar in 1910 and shortly after discovery, in December 1910, the New York Academy of Sciences named the pink variety of beryl "morganite" after financier  J P Morgan.     What has this to do with potentiometers I hear you ask?.... well, this is a very long blog post so we shall leave that revelation for another blog entry.
